What Is A Pole Building?
“Pole buildings” (sometimes called “pole barns”) are a type of post-frame construction that was developed in the 1930s during the economic downturn of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. Farmers needed an inexpensive and reliable way to construct new barns and storage facilities, so they began utilizing recycled telephone poles as the core support component. They developed quick and efficient methods of using this low-cost material for the structural framework, which had the added advantage of requiring little or no concrete foundational support. This of course, represented another significant time and cost reduction.
Modern pole buildings have vastly improved upon the original concept, but continue to be primarily braced by a set of deep-set poles, and still don’t need or rely on structural support from a concrete foundation. They are thus far less expensive and time-consuming to create than other traditional types of construction because they require less material and labor. Pole buildings are, however, strong and durable, and can be as attractive and good-looking as any other architectural structure. That’s why pole buildings are the ideal solution for so many common commercial, agricultural and residential problems and situations.
What Are The Advantages Of Pole Buildings?
Creating the foundation is typically the most difficult, time-consuming and expensive step in building construction. Moreover, the ground on many otherwise ideal or suitable locations for a building is often not very even, which makes the establishment of a level concrete foundation even more costly. Fortunately, pole buildings do not require a strict concrete foundation, making them not only more cost-effective but also the easiest and most viable solution in those situations.
Pole buildings also utilize a far less complex framing and structural support scheme than buildings created using traditional construction systems. Consequently, they typically require fewer materials and less labor, which of course translates into overall lower construction and maintenance costs.
Are Pole Buildings Suitable For Cold Weather?
Absolutely! Every pole building from Pole Buildings Unlimited is rated for a snow load based on what your geographic region typically requires. Also, depending upon the intended use, your pole building can be fitted with insulation, weather-proofing, and HVAC systems that can make it as comfortable as any room in your home. That’s why in addition to being the perfect garage (complete with automatic door!) or winter place for horses and other domestic animals, pole buildings can also be the ideal office, retail space, workshop, or recreational room.
Do Pole Buildings Require A Building Permit?
Most of the time, yes, just as is the case with any permanent structure. Every city and municipality will have different regulations, so it’s important to be fully aware of things like your area’s electrical codes and zoning requirements BEFORE planning the construction of a pole building.
